rake setae of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba

image-bank foto kils

Name: Antarctic krill (Leuchtgarnele, Walkrebs)

Scientific name: Euphausia superba

Details: rake setae at the end of the thoracopod used to scrape off microalgae from the ice

Status:REM stereoscan gold spattered scanned in Zoologisches Institut CAU Kiel with Gerd Alberti

Special: three of the very strong rake setae visible, in oposition to the filter setae these have a conical construction, growing much stronger towards the base, an indication that they are not supported at their distal tip - they are used to scrach off the icealgae
